Choosing Your Sailing Vessel

When planning a sailing trip to Croatia to watch dolphins, it is important to choose the right vessel. Here are some factors to consider:

Types of Sailboats

There are two main types of sailboats: monohulls and catamarans. Monohulls are traditional sailboats with a single hull, while catamarans have two hulls. Monohulls are better for experienced sailors who enjoy handling the boat and sailing in rough weather. Catamarans are more stable and spacious, making them a great choice for families or larger groups.

Charter Options

There are several charter options available, including bareboat, skippered, and fully-crewed charters. Bareboat charters are for experienced sailors who want to sail on their own. Skippered charters for sailing in Croatia are for those who want a local guide to help them navigate the area. Fully-crewed charters are for those who want a luxurious and relaxing sailing experience.

Essential Features for Dolphin Watching

When choosing a sailboat for dolphin watching, it is important to consider the essential features. Look for a sailboat with a spacious deck that allows for easy movement and visibility. A sailboat with a shallow draft is also important, as it allows for closer access to the shore and shallow waters where dolphins are often spotted. Additionally, a sailboat with a quiet engine is ideal, as it minimizes noise pollution and disturbance to the dolphins.

Overall, choosing the right sailboat for dolphin watching in Croatia can greatly enhance your sailing experience. Consider the type of sailboat, charter option, and essential features when making your decision.

Best Time to Sail

The shoulder months of May, June, September, and October offer more comfortable temperatures, with an average of 25°C. The sea is also warmer during these months, making swimming and snorkeling more enjoyable.
When sailing in Croatia with dolphins, it is important to take certain safety measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In this section, we will discuss the personal safety gear and emergency protocols that sailors should be aware of.

Personal Safety Gear

When sailing in Croatia, it is recommended to wear a life jacket at all times. This is especially important when sailing with dolphins, as unexpected movements of the boat or the dolphins can cause a sailor to fall overboard. In addition to a life jacket, sailors should wear comfortable, non-slip shoes to prevent slipping on the deck.

Sailors should also wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. In the summer months, the sun can be intense, so it is important to wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect the skin from sunburn. In cooler months, sailors should dress in layers to stay warm.

Emergency Protocols

In case of an emergency, it is important to have a plan in place. Sailors should know the location of the nearest port or marina, as well as the emergency phone numbers for the area. The emergency numbers for Croatia are 112 for general emergencies, 192 for the police, and 194 for the fire department.

It is also important to have a first aid kit on board, which should include items such as bandages, antiseptic, and pain relievers. In case of a medical emergency, sailors should contact the emergency services immediately and follow their instructions.

Use a fast shutter speed: Marine life can move quickly, so it’s important to use a fast shutter speed to capture their movements. Aim for a shutter speed of at least 1/250th of a second.

Experiment with angles: Try shooting from different angles to add interest to your photographs. Shoot from above, below, and even sideways to capture unique perspectives.

Prepare to be captivated by the beauty, tranquility, and hidden gems that await in this Croatian paradise.

How were the Kornati Islands formed?

The Kornati Islands, also known as the Stomorski islands, are an archipelago located in the northern part of Dalmatia, south from Zadar and west from Šibenik, in the Šibenik-Knin County, Croatia. Here’s how they were formed:

Geological Origin:

The Kornati archipelago is the result of geological processes. It is the “crown” of a tectonic rift that runs underwater from Istria and partially emerges above sea level along a 35 km (22 mi) stretch of the central Croatian coast

During the late Ice Age, rising sea levels transformed fields into sea and mountain ranges into islands. This process is still ongoing. Ancient remains on Kornati, which were above sea level or at sea level two thousand years ago, provide evidence of this transformation.

The geomorphology of the region is extraordinary, with a dense cluster of islands in a relatively small sea area.

Historical Inhabitants:

Although signs indicate Neolithic inhabitation, the Kornati archipelago is not permanently inhabited today.

The Illyrian tribe of Liburnians lived on the islands until the arrival of the Romans. The Kornati islands were part of the water area where the Liburnians controlled sea travel.

Remains of Liburnian forts and barrows, as well as Roman-era structures, can be found on various islands.

Recent History:

In the 16th century, Sali fishermen dominated the sea around Kornati.

From the mid-17th century, shepherds from Murter and Betina took over the Kornati karst and fields. Their flocks covered Kornati pastures, and their crops (including vineyards and later olive groves) gradually expanded.

Despite this history, no permanent settlements formed on Kornat or Žut, which remains an interesting feature of the Kornati archipelago.

In summary, the Kornati Islands are a remarkable geological formation shaped by tectonic processes and inhabited by various civilizations throughout history. They continue to captivate visitors with their rugged beauty and unique landscape. As George Bernard Shaw eloquently put it, “On the last day of Creation God desired to crown His work, and thus created the Kornati islands out of tears, stars, and breath”

And the best part? You can snag incredible deals on last-minute sailing holidays!

In this blog post will talk about last minute sailing holidays in Croatia with skipper.

Why Last-Minute Croatia?

There are many reasons to consider a last-minute sailing trip to Croatia:

Unbeatable Discounts: Charter companies often offer significant discounts on yachts just before departure dates. You can find yourself on a luxurious catamaran or a classic sailboat at a fraction of the regular price.

Flexible Itineraries: Embrace the freedom of a last-minute trip! Croatia has endless possibilities for island hopping, secluded coves, and vibrant towns. Chart your own course and discover hidden gems along the way.

Glorious Spring Weather: April and May offer delightful weather in Croatia, with warm days and pleasant evenings perfect for enjoying the outdoors.

Planning Your Last-Minute Escape

While spontaneity is key, a little pre-trip planning goes a long way:

Choose Your Dates: Availability changes quickly, so be flexible with your travel window. The week of April 20th offers some current last-minute deals.

Consider Your Crew: Are you a couple seeking romance, a group of friends on an adventure, or a family looking for a unique bonding experience? Knowing your group dynamics will help pick the perfect boat.

Search for Deals: Several reputable yacht charter companies specialize in last-minute sailing deals in Croatia.

Don’t Forget the Essentials: Pack light clothes for warm weather, sunscreen, a swimsuit, and a hat. You can stock up on provisions at marinas or local shops.

Embark on an Unforgettable Journey

With the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and the turquoise waters sparkling below, your last-minute sailing adventure in Croatia will be an unforgettable experience. Explore hidden coves, discover charming port towns, and indulge in fresh seafood on secluded beaches. Croatia offers a chance to unwind, reconnect with nature, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

At Alitis Yachting you can rent sailboats in Croatia, catamarans, yachts, motorboats and dinghies. We are a charter agency that offers the largest fleet of vessels for rent with or without a skipper.

If you do not find what you are looking for, contact us with a query. Click on “book now, fill in all the fields and send the questionnaire or send us an e-mail and we will choose several options and send you to choose the one that suits you.

Croatia and its over 1,000 islands, some of which are inhabited, began to be a popular sailing destination in the 1980s, and since then its popularity has only grown. It is an understatement to say that it is one of the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean.

While sailing in Croatia, you will surely find the beach of your dreams and you will be able to explore endlessly and sail in a pleasant climate. Croatia is the pearl of the Adriatic and offers many beautiful landscapes. Halfway between Central Europe and the Mediterranean, it offers thousands of islands and more than 6,000 kilometers of coastline.

If you decided to sail Croatian islands you have countless choices for the port of departure: Pula, Zadar, Sukošan, Biograd, Murter and Šibenik, Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik, just to name a few of the places where charter companies are located.

If you started your vacation in Croatia from the north, with a beautiful rented sailboat from Pula, don’t forget that Pula is one of the safest ports in Croatia. Do not miss the opportunity to visit ancient places in Pula, especially the Roman amphitheater.

Two other must-see destinations

Two other must-see destinations are Poreč, surrounded by green bays, and Rovinj, with its spectacular indented coastline characterized by rocks, a fishing harbor and small beaches that are always different from each other. Recommendation: don’t leave Rovinj without trying fuži, typical regional pasta with clam sauce, Istrian prosciutto and sugar cookies, crispy biscuits sprinkled with sugar.

Biograd, on the other hand, is in central Croatian coast and enables navigation to Kornati. The islands are limestone and sparsely populated, ideal for peaceful and pleasant exploration by sailboat or catamaran. Kornati with its many islands, is a top destination for sailing and boaters.

If you sail towards one of the destinations, such as the fascinating Kornati archipelago with its 147 islands and islets on an area of only 15 kilometers, you won’t go wrong, you will be delighted. Many islands are scattered in a small area and make an ideal place for sailors in search of hidden coves. Be sure to sail to the steep cliffs on the Lower Kornati and those on the island of Klobučar (the highest is 80 meters). The islands are mostly uninhabited, so there are no hotels, and fishermen can offer you their freshly caught fish. When you sail to Žut bay, which is a paradise with a calm sea, you have reached Kornati, the largest hinterland of the archipelago.

When you spot the buoys floating in the turquoise water, you’ll know you’ve reached a tavern serving fresh fish, shellfish, lobster, lamb and other local specialties.

What do I need to know before renting a boat in Croatia?

Croatia has been a member of the European Union since July 1, 2013. The remaining validity of the requested passport is ninety (90) days from the expected end date of the stay.

If you are coming by your own foreign ship, you are obliged to report to the harbor master’s office of the first and nearest port to complete the formalities of entering the country, including the payment of the residence and maritime tax. In exchange for this fee, the harbor authorities issue a one-year license sticker, the price of which is determined in proportion to the type of vessel and engine power.

Certificate for navigation

Passenger list/crew list – Crew list

Certificate confirming the ability of the vessel driver to perform work on the vessel, according to the regulations in force in the country of the vessel’s registration or corresponding regulations in force in the Republic of Croatia

Insurance against damage caused by third parties

Certificate of ownership or authorization to use the vessel issued by the owner

Permit disk/sticker, which can be purchased from the harbor master at the port of call (see next paragraph)

All types of rowing boats, shorter than 2.5 meters and less than 5 kW propulsion power, are exempt from paying the license sticker.
