how-to-sail-dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a stunning city on the southern coast of Croatia, known for its medieval walls, baroque architecture, and rich history. It is also a great base for sailing, as it offers easy access to some of the most beautiful and diverse islands in the Adriatic Sea. In this blog post, we will give you some tips on how to sail in Dubrovnik, and recommend some of the best sights, hidden gems, and islands around Dubrovnik.

How to Sail in Dubrovnik

There are several ways to sail in Dubrovnik, depending on your budget, experience, and preference. You can choose to:

– Charter a yacht: This is the most popular and convenient option. You can choose from a variety of yachts, from luxury catamarans to cozy sailboats, and book them online. The average cost of chartering a yacht in Dubrovnik is around €2,500 per week, but it can vary depending on the season, the size, and the type of the yacht.

Join a sailing tour

This is a great option if you want to meet new people, learn from our experienced sailors, and have a hassle-free sailing experience. You can join a sailing tour with a group of like-minded travelers, and follow a pre-planned itinerary that covers some of the most scenic and interesting places around Dubrovnik. You can also enjoy some activities and excursions along the way, such as snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and wine tasting.

The Best Sights, Hidden Gems, and Islands Around Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has a lot to offer, both on land and on sea. Some of the best sights, hidden gems, and islands around Dubrovnik are:

The Old Town

This is the heart and soul of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 13th century. It is surrounded by impressive walls that stretch for 2 km, and contain several gates, towers, and fortresses. Traverse the historic walls to feast your eyes on the city’s panorama and the serene maritime expanse. You can also explore the narrow streets, and visit some of the landmarks, such as the Rector’s Palace, the Cathedral, the Franciscan Monastery, and the Sponza Palace. You can also experience the culture and the atmosphere of the Old Town, by browsing the shops, cafes, and markets, or joining the festivals and events that take place throughout the year.

Lokrum Island

This is a small and tranquil island, located just 15 minutes by boat from the Old Town. It is a nature reserve, with lush vegetation, exotic plants, and peacocks. It is also a historical site, with a Benedictine monastery, a botanical garden, and a fort. You can relax on the rocky beaches, swim in the clear waters, or hike to the highest point of the island, where you can see a stunning view of Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands. You can also visit the Game of Thrones museum, where you can see some of the props and costumes from the famous TV show that was filmed in Dubrovnik.

– Elaphiti Islands: These are a group of 13 islands, of which only three are inhabited: Kolocep, Lopud, and Sipan. They are located north-west of Dubrovnik, and can be reached by ferry or by yacht. They are known for their natural beauty, with sandy beaches, pine forests, olive groves, and vineyards. Boast a wealth of historical and cultural treasures, including time-honored churches, fortresses, and estates. You can enjoy the peace and quiet of the islands, or indulge in some of the activities, such as cycling, fishing, diving, and sailing.

Mljet Island

This is one of the most remote and unspoiled islands in Croatia, located south-east of Dubrovnik. It is a national park, with two saltwater lakes, a 12th-century monastery, and a dense forest. It is also a paradise for wildlife, with deer, wild boar, and eagles. You can explore the island by bike, boat, or foot, and admire the scenery, the history, and the biodiversity. You can also swim in the lakes, or visit the small island of St. Mary, where the monastery is located.

Korcula Island

This is the sixth-largest island in Croatia, located south of Dubrovnik. It is famous for being the birthplace of Marco Polo, the legendary explorer and traveler. It is also known for its cultural heritage, with a medieval town, a cathedral, a museum, and a folklore festival. You can also enjoy the natural beauty of the island, with sandy beaches, coves, and vineyards. You can also taste some of the local specialties, such as the white wine, the cheese, and the fish.

Sailing in Dubrovnik is an amazing experience, as you can discover some of the most beautiful and diverse sights, hidden gems, and islands in the Adriatic Sea. Whether you choose to charter a yacht, join a sailing tour, or sail your own boat, you will be impressed by the scenery, the history, and the culture that await you in Dubrovnik. Happy sailing! 🇭🇷
