Sailing Adventures: From Tunis to Novi Vinodolski via Sicily and Crotone
The sea beckons once again. Tomorrow morning, we set sail on another chapter of our Mediterranean adventure, leaving Tunis (Bizerta) and heading towards the iconic shores of Siracusa, Sicily, then onward to Crotone before finishing this leg of the journey in the beautiful town of Novi Vinodolski. It’s a route rich with history, scenic beauty, and the promise of open horizons. Let me take you through what lies ahead and the joys of navigating this part of the Mediterranean.
Departure: Bizerta, Tunisia
We start our journey in Bizerta, Tunisia—one of North Africa’s oldest ports and a true gem. Bizerta, with its blend of Mediterranean and Arab influences, has always felt like a hidden treasure. The Old Port, lined with colorful fishing boats and bustling cafes, stands as a reminder of its vibrant history and maritime importance. This morning’s departure will be a bittersweet moment as we leave behind the charms of Tunisian shores.
The Mediterranean weather has been kind to us, offering calm seas and a steady breeze. With the boat ready and provisions stocked, excitement builds for the days ahead. From here, Sicily awaits.
Leg 1: Bizerta to Siracusa, Sicily
The stretch from Bizerta to Siracusa, a city on Sicily’s southeastern coast, will take us across the Strait of Sicily. This roughly 170-nautical-mile passage brings us into Italian waters after a night at sea. Sailing under starlight across the Mediterranean is always a magical experience. The vastness of the dark sea, punctuated by bioluminescent trails and the steady rhythm of the waves, makes night sailing unforgettable.
Siracusa will be our first stop—a city steeped in ancient history. Once the heart of Greek Sicily, it remains a cultural and architectural marvel. We look forward to anchoring near Ortigia Island, the historic center, where narrow streets, Baroque piazzas, and vibrant markets will offer us a chance to stretch our legs and absorb the Sicilian way of life. Fresh cannoli and a strong espresso might just be the reward for our overnight crossing.
Leg 2: Siracusa to Crotone, Italy
From Siracusa, we turn northeast toward the Calabrian coast, heading to Crotone. The 150-nautical-mile leg across the Ionian Sea is another test of endurance but promises beauty and adventure. This section of the Mediterranean, often called the “heel” of Italy’s boot, is where Greek myths meet Italian charm.
Crotone, with its mix of ancient ruins and coastal charm, will greet us after the journey. The city dates back to Magna Graecia, once home to philosophers like Pythagoras. It’s a sailor’s dream to dock in a place where history and the sea blend so seamlessly.
We’ll replenish our supplies, perhaps sample local Calabrian specialties, and enjoy the warm hospitality of this coastal town before preparing for the final push north.
Final Leg: Crotone to Novi Vinodolski, Croatia
Our final destination on this voyage is Novi Vinodolski, a picturesque town on the Croatian Adriatic. It will be a longer sail up the Italian Adriatic coast before crossing into Croatian waters, but few sailing experiences compare to this journey. The Adriatic, with its calm waters and dazzling blue hues, is a sailor’s paradise.
Novi Vinodolski is a fitting reward for this Mediterranean adventure. Known for its clear waters, red-roofed buildings, and a backdrop of lush hills, the town radiates coastal tranquility. Arriving here will mark the end of this chapter of our journey, but also the start of new explorations.
The Joy of the Journey
Sailing is more than just traveling from one place to another. It’s about the rhythm of the wind and waves, the quiet moments under a canopy of stars, and the thrill of arriving in a new port with its own stories to tell. Tomorrow morning, as we leave Tunis and look forward to Sicily, Crotone, and Croatia, the excitement is tangible. Every leg of the journey will bring its own challenges, beauty, and memories.
Stay tuned as we share updates along the way—the sunsets, the sea life, the small victories, and the sense of freedom that only sailing can offer.
Fair winds and following seas!
